The Easy Read format of documents have been designed to allow people with learning difficulties access to the same information as everyone else. It uses a simplification process that breaks down the original document and ‘translates’ it into a format that people with learning difficulties can understand, making the document easy to read.

The Easy Read documents often contain different photographs and clipart than the original to help to illustrate points clearer.

K International can convert almost any document into the Easy Read format, providing you with PDFs or colour printed copies.

If you are part of the UK Government you can purchase Easy Read documents under the terms and conditions of the OGC approved agreement 05/GEN/25. This is a pan Government agreement established by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) to allow the Government to communicate with hard-to-reach groups.

Easy Read Production Process

The process used is as follows;

Summarise - A summary of the document will be produced with the key points highlighted.

Simplify the text - All sentences will be shortened and simplified. We aim to use a maximum of 20 words in a sentence.

Describe complex words - Complex words or phrases are described immediately after they appear in the text.

Removal of abbreviations - All abbreviations are written in full.

Format - The document will be formatted following the Easy Read guidelines.

Clipart & photographs added - Specially commissioned clipart/photographs are used to help in the delivery of the meaning. Images are placed next to the text to compliment sentences.

Consultation with people with learning disabilities. Last but not least the final document will be shown to groups with learning difficulties to gain feedback. Amendments may be made to the document if needed at this stage.
