How does K International qualify their linguistic experts?

K International has a vender management team dedicated to the recruitment of our linguistic experts. They currently manage a database of over 5,000 K International approved linguists covering over 150 languages.

As well as passing K International’s own language skills testing programme, all K International linguists have a Masters Degree in languages (or equivalent), only translate/interpret into their native language, have over three years previous professional experience and follow a strict code of ethics.

Do I need to send the original document?

No, original documents are preferred but photocopies and scans can also be used. If the document is available in electronic format this is the best option.

What does ‘source’ mean?

‘Source’ refers to the document and language you want us to translate from.

What does ‘target’ mean?

‘Target’ refers to the translated document or the language you require the document to be translated into.

How long does it take to translate a document?

On average translators can translate around 2,000 words per day. The timeline for translating your document will depend on the format of the source document, the language and service required and the technicality of the content.

What is machine translation?

Machine translation (MT) is an automated translation system by which computer software is used to translate text from one language to another. This process tends to produce very literal translations and unpredictable translation quality.

K International does NOT use machine translation in its translation process.

What is translation memory software?

Translation memory software (TMS) electronically stores previously approved translated material into a database.

This database is then used on your future projects to save you money and improve the overall consistency and quality off all your translated material.

What is localization?

Localization involves a comprehensive study of the target culture in order to correctly adapt the translation, product or service.

Can I get my translation certified?

Yes – K International offer four kinds of certified translation, dependent on your requirement:

Certificate of Accuracy

K International will certify the translation is an accurate representation of the original. This is usually required for general or official documents which need to be presented to non-government bodies or academic institutions. The translation is marked with a K International certified stamp and accompanied with a K international Certificate of Accuracy.

Notarisation

For official documentation and deeds requested by Government bodies, the translation may need to be certified/notarised by Affidavit. This is a declaration which is made in writing and on oath, sworn in front of a solicitor, attorney or notary public that the translation is, to the best of the translator's knowledge, complete and accurate. The translation and a copy of the original are then marked with a certified stamp. Notarisation is often a legal requirement.

Legalisation/Apostille

This is required for translated documents that are to be presented to overseas authorities outside the UK, such as marriage or work applications. Legalisation is the same as Notarisation/Sworn Certification, except that the signature of the solicitor, attorney or notary public has been checked, or Apostilled, by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to be accepted by a foreign country, as part of the Hague Convention.

Certification outside the UK

Certification of a translated document is different in the UK than in Europe, and generally the rest of the world.

In Europe, a translation can be certified by a sworn professional translator who has been duly authorised by the Government of the country in question to translate and notarise a document. Any translation produced by a sworn translator is an official document in its own right. The translation is certified with a stamped declaration which is written in the relevant language, as well as in English.

What does the project manager do?

K International assigns a dedicated project manager to every project that we undertake. They play an essential role in the process, serving as an intermediary between the many people involved, liaising with and transferring information between relevant parties. They ensure our services are delivered to specification, within budget and on time.

What is proofreading?

Once the translator has completed their translation it will be passed to an independent proof-reader who will review the translated document against the original source document, all reference material and style guides.

The independent proof-reader, a qualified independent translator, will make constructive comments on the translation. These are then fed back and discussed with the original translator. This translation review cycle continues until translator, proof-reader and project manager all sign the translation off as final.

We recommend the translation/review cycle for all documentation intended for publication.

What is typesetting?

Our experienced in-house typesetting and design team will work directly with the translators to format the translations inline with your specifications.

What is a post DTP (Desk Top Publishing) check?

After typesetting, the document will be returned to the original translator for final pre print checks. This provides a final contextual and linguistic check before publication of the document.
