The Indonesian Language
Indonesian, also known as Bahasa, is the official language of Indonesia. According to Ethnologue, about 23,143,354 people speak Indonesian worldwide. Bahasa is a standardized form of the Malay language, and plays a crucial role in uniting citizens of this incredibly diverse country and enabling them to communicate with one another. Indonesia’s official motto is “unity in diversity,” and it is particularly appropriate in terms of language. There are about 300 regional languages spoken by different groups throughout the country, but just about everyone can speak Bahasa Indonesian.
Indonesian is a version of the Malay language, an Austronesian language that has served for centuries as a language for trade and communication between different groups in the Indonesian islands. The impetus for creating a common tongue came from the Sumpah Pemuda, or youth pledge, taken in 1928 by young nationalists seeking independence from the Dutch:
Bertumpah darah yang satu, tanah air Indonesia (One blood — the Indonesian homeland)
Berbangsa satu, bangsa Indonesia (One people — the Indonesian nation)
bahasa persatuan, bahasa Indonesia (a unifying language — Indonesian)
Bahasa Indonesian was standardized after independence, and within 50 years the number of speakers went from almost zero to almost 80% of the population.
In addition to Malay, Indonesian has also been influenced by Dutch, Sanskrit, Chinese, Arabic, and Javanese. Spoken Indonesian in informal settings is also heavily influenced by the local language and dialect of the person speaking it. However, “proper” standardized Indonesian is used in the media, by politicians and in schools.
One of the most interesting characteristics of Indonesian and some related languages is the way that the plural is formed. In English, of course, we usually add an “s” to a word to indicate that there is more than one of the item. In Indonesian, the word is repeated twice, a phenomenon called reduplication. For example, the word “orang” means person in Indonesian. To indicate that you are talking about more than one person, you would say “orang-orang.” Indonesian also differs from English in that there are numerous levels of formality within the language, so it’s important to take care with your word choice to make sure you are not being unintentionally disrespectful.
