Easy Read Services

Easy Read is a format designed to help people with learning difficulties. It is straight to the point, graphical, clear, colourful, and simple to understand.

The service is used by the National Health Service, charities, transport agencies and many local authorities.

Any of your documents can be converted to Easy Read by our in-house design team.

To make a Easy Read document we:

• Combine words and pictures
• Use a single image set
• Adopt short sentences throughout the document
• Tell a story
• Avoid jargon
• Keep to essentials

Converting Complex Documents

Easy Read documents can help to explain complicated processes. One recent example is the national census.

Here we converted the census information into a format that everyone could understand easily and formatted it using the Easy Read guidelines. An example of the work is below.

The process that we used to create these documents would be the same as the process we use to create your Easy Read documents, that is;

Summarise — A summary of the document will be produced with the key points highlighted.

Simplify the text — All sentences will be shortened and simplified. We aim to use a maximum of 20 words in a sentence.

Describe complex words — Complex words or phrases are described immediately after they appear in the text.

Remove abbreviations — All abbreviations are written in full.

Format — The document will be formatted following the Easy Read guidelines.

Clipart & photographs — Specially commissioned clipart/photographs are used to help in the delivery of the meaning. Images are placed next to the text to compliment sentences.

Consultation (via focus group) —with people with learning disabilities. Last but not least the final document will be shown to groups with learning difficulties to gain feedback. Amendments may be made to the document if needed at this stage.
