The Swedish Language

Approximately 9 million people worldwide grow up speaking Swedish. Most of them live in Sweden, of course, but there are also Swedish-speaking communities in Finland. Swedish is a Nordic language. Like Danish and Norwegian, it is descended from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. This common ancestry means that Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are extremely similar. In fact, someone who speaks one language can often understand the others, although they may have a difficult time doing so. Both Swedish and Danish-speaking people usually have an easier time with Norwegian than they do with each other’s languages.

Today, Sweden boasts a literacy rate of 99%. Although the literacy rate would have been much lower in ancient times, Sweden has always been a literate society. In the Viking Age, inscriptions were written in the Swedish dialect of Old Norse using a runic alphabet called the Younger Futhark. Rune stones and runic inscriptions have been found in Norway and Denmark as well, but they are most common in Sweden. By 1250, however, the runes had fallen out of common use, and the Latin script was used instead.

The Old Swedish dialect evolved over centuries, and was heavily influenced by other Germanic languages such as Dutch and as Low Saxon. Over time, the language became more and more distinct from Danish and Norwegian. Also, the printing press played an important role in creating a standard Swedish language. King Gustav Vasa ordered the Bible to be translated into Swedish, producing the first complete translation in 1541. This translation was used for centuries, until the early 1900’s. Early written Swedish lacked uniform spelling rules, and in translating the Bible the spelling of several common word endings and vowels was defined for the first time.

Although Sweden does have many regional dialects, most people who speak them also speak the standardized national version of Swedish. Swedish does not yet have “official language” status in Sweden. However, the government is considering a law that would make it the official language and encourage its use both inside and outside the country. The law may be in effect by 2009. Fortunately for people who emigrate to Sweden, Swedish-language classes are provided to new immigrants.
